Pithra is a transliteration variant of the Sanskrit term Pitṛ, used in Hindu and related South Asian traditions to denote male ancestors or progenitors within a family lineage. The word derives from Sanskrit pitṛ meaning "father" or "ancestor" and is cognate with similar terms in several Indo-Aryan languages.

In Hindu cosmology, Pitṛ are ancestral spirits who reside in the afterlife and maintain a continuing relationship with the living family. They are distinct from deities and from mortal ancestors who are honored directly at home; Pitṛ are venerated through specific rites and rituals. The most widely observed observance is Pitṛ Paksha, a 16-day period in the Hindu calendar during which families perform rites to honor and appease their Pitṛ. Common practices include tarpan (offering water with sesame seeds and other cereals) and pinda-dāna (offering rice balls).
