pistearvo

Pistearvo is a Finnish term used to describe the numerical value assigned to a scoring unit within a larger assessment or game. It represents the weight of that unit in the total score, and the sum of all pistearvo-weighted results yields the final score or grade. The word combines piste, meaning point or score, with arvo, meaning value.

In educational contexts, pistearvo is the point value allocated to each question or task. Examinations, quizzes, or assignments are designed so that different items have different pistearvo; the final mark is calculated by aggregating the outcomes according to each item’s pistearvo. The maximum attainable score equals the sum of all assigned pistearvo.

In other contexts, pistearvo appears in competitive settings and games where tasks earn a specified number of points. It is also used in surveys or experimental scoring to reflect the importance or difficulty of particular responses or components.

Example: A test contains five questions with pistearvo values of 1, 2, 2, 3, and 2. The maximum score is 10 points. If a student answers correctly on questions totaling 7 points, the pistearvo-weighted total is 7.
