The balance of PPi in tissues is managed by enzymes such as ENPP1 and by transport mechanisms; disruptions can contribute to abnormal calcification or mineralization disorders.

Industrial and food applications are broad. Pyrophosphate salts serve as leavening agents in baking, emulsifiers and buffering agents in foods, and sequestrants that bind metal ions in detergents and processed products. They also help control crystallization and prevent caking in various formulations.
