Pinnamateriaalit are the various materials used to cover and protect the roofs of buildings. The term is common in Finland and refers to any product that creates a waterproof barrier, defends against the elements, and can also act as an insulator. Typical materials include metal sheets, copper, zinc, slate, tiles, slate, concrete, asphalt shingles, synthetic membranes, and green roofs. Each type has a distinct construction method, durability, appearance, and cost profile.

Metal roofs are valued for their longevity, lightweight construction and low maintenance. They can be coated or painted for corrosion resistance. Clay and concrete tiles are popular in traditional Finnish architecture because of their fire resistance and thermal mass. Asphalt shingles are inexpensive, easy to install, and available in many colors, making them common in residential settings. Synthetic membranes—such as EPDM, TPO and PVC—offer flexible solutions, are lightweight, and can be installed over existing roofs. Green roofs add vegetation, which improves insulation and reduces stormwater runoff, but they require a robust waterproofing layer underneath.

The choice of material depends on climate, building height, architectural style, local regulations and budget. Historically, Finnish roofs were made largely of thatch or clay tiles. In the twentieth century industrial materials such as corrugated steel and concrete prevailed, while recent decades have seen a resurgence of cedar plywood, recycled composite boards and eco‑friendly membranes. Sustainability considerations include recyclable content, embodied energy and the roof’s lifetime performance. Proper installation and periodic inspection remain essential to extend the roof’s service life and protect the building from water damage.
