Ping scanning, also known as ICMP scanning, is a network probing technique used to determine if a host is online and reachable on an IP network. It typically employs the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), specifically by sending ICMP Echo Request packets to a target IP address. If the host is online and configured to respond, it will send back an ICMP Echo Reply packet.

The presence of an Echo Reply indicates that the target host is active and accessible. Ping scanning can be used for various purposes, including network inventory, identifying active hosts, and basic network troubleshooting. It's a simple yet effective method for initial reconnaissance.

However, ping scanning has limitations. Many network devices and operating systems are configured to block or ignore ICMP Echo Requests for security reasons, leading to false negatives where an online host might appear offline. Conversely, firewalls can be configured to allow ICMP Echo Requests while blocking other traffic, potentially giving a misleading impression of network accessibility. Advanced scanning techniques and port scanning are often used in conjunction with ping scanning to gain a more comprehensive understanding of a network's status.
