In Finland, pidättäminen can be ordered by a police officer under specific circumstances outlined in the Code of Criminal Procedure. Grounds for pidättäminen typically include reasonable suspicion of a criminal offense that carries a penalty of a fine or imprisonment, or if the person is believed to be attempting to evade justice or flee the country. The duration of pidättäminen is limited, usually not exceeding 24 hours, after which the detained person must either be released or brought before a judge for a decision on continued detention.
