They are characterized by their atomic structure, where silicon-oxygen tetrahedra link together to form flat, continuous sheets. Each tetrahedron has a silicon atom at its center bonded to four oxygen atoms at the corners. In phyllosilicates, these tetrahedra share three of their oxygen atoms with neighboring tetrahedra, forming hexagonal rings arranged in a planar sheet. The remaining oxygen atom points away from the sheet, available for bonding with cations or other silicate layers.

The general chemical formula for phyllosilicates can be represented as XmYnZp Oq (OH)r, where X, Y, and Z represent various cations and r is the number of hydroxyl groups. The specific arrangement and composition of these cations determine the particular mineral within the phyllosilicate group. Common cations include aluminum, magnesium, iron, potassium, sodium, and calcium. The layered structure of phyllosilicates results in distinctive physical properties, most notably perfect basal cleavage, meaning they tend to split into thin sheets along parallel planes. This property is most evident in minerals like mica.

Phyllosilicates are abundant in the Earth's crust and are important constituents of many igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. They are classified into several subgroups based on their layer structures and charge. Major subgroups include the micas, clay minerals (such as kaolinite and smectite), and chlorites.
