Phototropins are a class of blue-light photoreceptors found in plants, algae, and some bacteria. These proteins play a crucial role in mediating various light-dependent responses, most notably phototropism, the directional growth of a plant towards a light source.

The mechanism involves the absorption of blue light by a flavin chromophore within the phototropin molecule. This light absorption triggers a conformational change in the protein, initiating a signal transduction cascade. In the context of phototropism, this cascade leads to the redistribution of auxin, a plant hormone. Auxin accumulates on the shaded side of the stem, promoting cell elongation in that region. This differential growth causes the stem to bend towards the light.

Beyond phototropism, phototropins are involved in other light responses, including chloroplast movement within cells to optimize light capture and minimize photodamage, stomatal opening in response to blue light, and the regulation of gene expression. Different phototropin isoforms often have partially overlapping but also distinct functions within the organism. Understanding phototropins is key to comprehending how plants perceive and respond to their light environment, influencing their growth, development, and survival.
