Phosphon refers to a functional group or a related chemical compound containing a phosphorus-carbon bond where phosphorus is directly attached to at least one carbon atom and also to an oxygen atom. The general formula for a phosphonate ester is R-P(=O)(OR')2, and for a phosphonic acid it is R-P(=O)(OH)2. These compounds are distinct from phosphates, which contain phosphorus bonded only to oxygen and other phosphorus atoms, not directly to carbon.

Phosphonates play a significant role in various fields. In biology, phosphonates are found as natural products, for example, in certain antibiotics and in phosphonolipids which are important components of cell membranes. Industrially, phosphonates are widely used as water treatment chemicals, acting as scale and corrosion inhibitors in cooling towers and other industrial water systems.
