Petrográfiában, also known as petrography, is the branch of geology that deals with the detailed description and systematic classification of rocks. It involves the study of rocks in hand specimen and under the microscope. Petrography focuses on identifying the constituent minerals, their textures, structures, and relationships within a rock. This analysis allows geologists to understand the origin, formation history, and potential uses of various rock types.

The primary tools used in petrography are the polarizing microscope and thin sections. A thin section is a very thin slice of rock, typically about 30 micrometers thick, mounted on a glass slide. When viewed under a petrographic microscope, the minerals within the thin section exhibit distinct optical properties, such as color, pleochroism, birefringence, and extinction angles, which are diagnostic for their identification. By observing these properties, geologists can determine the mineralogical composition of the rock.

Furthermore, petrography examines the texture of a rock, which refers to the size, shape, and arrangement of its constituent mineral grains and the relationships between them. Textural features, such as grain size distribution, rounding, sorting, and the presence of intergrowths or replacements, provide crucial clues about the rock's formation environment and the processes it has undergone. For example, certain textures are characteristic of igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rocks, and can even indicate specific conditions of cooling, deposition, or pressure and temperature experienced during metamorphism. Petrographic analysis is fundamental to many fields of geology, including resource exploration, engineering geology, and environmental studies.
