Peruslaskusääntö is a fundamental concept in elementary mathematics, referring to the order in which mathematical operations should be performed to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. This convention is crucial for solving expressions that involve multiple operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The most common mnemonic used to remember the order of operations is PEMDAS, which stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). In some regions, other acronyms like BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) or BIDMAS (Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) are used, but they represent the same hierarchical principle.

Following the peruslaskusääntö, operations within parentheses or brackets are always performed first. Next, exponents or orders (like squares or roots) are evaluated. Following that, multiplication and division are carried out in the order they appear from left to right. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed, also from left to right.
