Peroxidases are a large class of enzymes that catalyze oxidation-reduction reactions, specifically the decomposition of peroxides. They are found in a wide variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. The general reaction catalyzed by peroxidases involves the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or organic hydroperoxides to water or alcohols, respectively, while the oxidizing agent is reduced.

These enzymes often contain a heme prosthetic group, similar to cytochromes, which is crucial for their catalytic activity. The active site of peroxidases typically includes an iron atom within the porphyrin ring. This iron atom can undergo oxidation and reduction cycles, facilitating the transfer of electrons necessary for the enzymatic reaction.

Peroxidases play vital roles in numerous biological processes. In plants, they are involved in lignin biosynthesis, defense against pathogens, and scavenging reactive oxygen species. In animals, they contribute to the immune response, for example, in neutrophils where myeloperoxidase produces hypochlorous acid to kill microbes. They are also important in detoxification pathways and can be found in various tissues, including the thyroid gland where they are involved in hormone synthesis. The activity of peroxidases can be influenced by pH, temperature, and the presence of inhibitors or activators.
