Perimysiumilla is a layer of connective tissue that surrounds bundles of muscle fibers called fascicles. Each fascicle is composed of numerous individual muscle cells, or myofibers. The perimysium plays a crucial role in organizing and supporting these fascicles within a larger muscle. It is made up of collagen fibers and fibroblasts, which contribute to its strength and elasticity.

Within the perimysium, blood vessels and nerves run to supply the muscle fibers. These vessels and nerves branch out and penetrate deeper into the muscle to reach individual myofibers. The perimysium also serves to transmit forces generated by the muscle fibers, allowing for coordinated muscle contraction. It helps to distribute tension evenly across the fascicles, preventing damage and ensuring efficient force transmission to the bones via the tendons.

The perimysium is continuous with the epimysium, the outermost sheath of connective tissue that encloses the entire muscle, and the endomysium, the delicate connective tissue that surrounds individual muscle fibers. This hierarchical arrangement of connective tissue layers is essential for the overall structure, function, and integrity of skeletal muscle. Damage to the perimysium can impair muscle function and contribute to muscle injuries.
