Peenemünde is a municipality in Germany located on the Baltic Sea coast of the island of Usedom in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is historically known for its significant role in rocketry development during the 20th century.

In the early 1930s, the German army established a rocket research facility in Peenemünde. This facility became the central site for the development of the V-2 rocket, a ballistic missile that was used during World War II. Under the leadership of Wernher von Braun, engineers and scientists worked on advanced rocket technology. The site included laboratories, test stands, and production facilities. The V-2 was a groundbreaking achievement in rocketry, though its use as a weapon caused widespread destruction and loss of life.

After World War II, the Soviet Union occupied Peenemünde and dismantled much of the rocket technology and infrastructure. Many of the German scientists, including Wernher von Braun, were brought to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip, where they continued their work on rocketry, contributing significantly to the American space program.

Today, Peenemünde is a tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in its historical significance. The Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum is located on the site of the former rocket development center, showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to the history of rocketry and the V-2. The area also offers natural beauty, with beaches and the surrounding Usedom Nature Park.
