pedán

Pedán is a term used in Spain to refer to the head of a pedanía, which is an administrative subdivision within a municipality. A pedanía typically covers a rural or peripheral population and is distinct from the urban core of the municipality. The person who leads a pedanía is ordinarily called the pedáneo; the female form is pedánea.

The role of the pedán is to represent the residents of the pedanía in relations with the municipal government and to oversee local needs within the framework of the municipality’s regulations. Common responsibilities include coordinating basic services such as road maintenance, street lighting, waste collection, and local infrastructure issues; managing or proposing budgetary items allocated to the pedanía; and acting as a liaison between residents and the city council. The pedán may also preside over a local pedanía council or assembly and contribute to the preparation of proposals for the municipal authorities.

Selection and powers of a pedán vary by municipality and region. In some municipalities, pedáneos are elected by residents of the pedanía in a dedicated election or as part of the broader municipal elections. In others, they are appointed by the municipal council or mayor. The exact scope of authority, budgets, and governance structures is defined by local regulations and regional laws, resulting in notable differences between municipalities.
