Parenterálnej refers to any route of administration of a medication or fluid that bypasses the digestive tract. This method is employed when oral administration is not feasible, effective, or desirable. Common parenteral routes include intravenous (into a vein), intramuscular (into a muscle), and subcutaneous (under the skin).

Intravenous administration allows for rapid absorption and immediate bioavailability of the substance into the bloodstream, making it ideal for emergencies or when precise dosage control is needed. Intramuscular injections are typically used for vaccines or medications that require a slower release than intravenous administration but faster than oral. Subcutaneous injections are suitable for medications that are absorbed slowly, such as insulin or some hormone therapies.

Other parenteral routes exist, such as intradermal (into the dermis, often used for allergy testing) and epidural (into the epidural space of the spine). The choice of parenteral route depends on the drug's properties, the desired onset and duration of action, and the patient's condition. Parenteral administration requires sterile techniques to prevent infection and is usually performed by trained healthcare professionals. It can also be used for nutritional support, known as parenteral nutrition, when the gastrointestinal tract cannot adequately absorb nutrients.
