Another important role is secretion, where some parenchyma cells can produce and release substances like oils, resins, or nectar.

Parenchyma cells are highly versatile and can undergo dedifferentiation and redifferentiation, allowing them to develop into other cell types when needed. This plasticity is vital for plant growth, repair, and regeneration. For example, they can divide to form new vascular tissues (xylem and phloem) or contribute to wound healing. Their thin cell walls facilitate the movement of substances within the plant and between cells, a process essential for nutrient transport and metabolic coordination.
