Parathyroïdweefsel is the part of the human body responsible for producing parathormone, also known as parathyroid hormone. These glands are located in the neck, embedded in the back of the thyroid gland. There are four parathyroid glands in the human body.

Parathyroïdweefsel produces parathormone, a hormone that helps regulate the levels of calcium in the blood. It maintains the balance of calcium between the blood and bones. When the levels of calcium in the blood drop, the parathyroid glands release parathormone, which prompts the bones to release stored calcium into the bloodstream.

Without sufficient parathormone production, the levels of calcium in the blood can drop to a point where it can cause disease. This can be due to various reasons such as parathyroid hyperplasia or adenoma. Parathyroid hyperplasia refers to the condition where all four parathyroid glands are overactive, producing excessive amounts of parathormone. Adenoma refers to the condition where a single parathyroid gland is overactive, also producing excessive amounts of parathormone.

Diseases related to parathyroid issues include osteoporosis, kidney stones, and hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia refers to high levels of calcium in the blood, which can be caused by excessive production of parathormone.

Gallstones are rarely related to parathyroid tumors or hyperparathyroidism. Treatment for diseases related to parathyroid issues typically involve surgery to remove the affected gland(s).
