Paraovarian is a term used in medicine to describe structures or cysts that are located next to the ovary but are separate from it. These are also known as paratubal cysts when they are found near the fallopian tube. Paraovarian cysts arise from the Wolffian or Mullerian ducts, which are remnants of embryonic structures that play a role in the development of the reproductive organs. They are typically benign and asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause any symptoms and do not pose a health risk.

These cysts are usually discovered incidentally during a pelvic examination or ultrasound performed for other reasons. They can vary in size and may be filled with fluid. In most cases, no treatment is necessary as they are not functional and do not affect fertility. However, if a paraovarian cyst becomes very large, causes pain, or shows any signs of complications such as torsion (twisting of the cyst), surgical removal might be considered. Diagnosis is usually made through imaging techniques like ultrasound, and sometimes MRI or CT scans may be used for further evaluation. They are distinct from ovarian cysts, which originate from the ovary itself.
