A papiermaschine, or paper machine, is a large industrial installation used to produce paper by forming a continuous sheet from a suspension of fibrous pulp. It converts water and fibers into a cohesive web that can be wound into rolls and subsequently finished. The machine integrates forming, pressing, and drying operations in a single continuous process.

The forming section deposits pulp slurry onto a moving forming fabric or wire, aided by a headbox and suction to drain water. The resulting web is transferred to presses that mechanically remove moisture before it travels through a dryer section, which uses heated cylinders or drums to evaporate remaining water. Optional units may include a size press, coating, calendering, and finishing equipment to adjust density, smoothness, and printability. The process is monitored and controlled to ensure uniform basis weight and quality.

The Fourdrinier machine is the most common type of papiermaschine, featuring a flat forming board and a long wire run. Cylinder machines and twin-wire forms were historically used for particular grades such as tissue or specialty papers. Modern machines can operate at speeds exceeding 1,000 meters per minute and at widths of several meters, supported by automation and process-control systems to maintain uniform basis weight and quality.

Paper machines enable large-scale production of many grades, from newsprint and packaging board to writing and coated papers. They are capital-intensive, energy- and water-intensive, and subject to ongoing environmental and efficiency improvements, including water reuse, energy recovery, and closed-loop systems.
