Panel regressionsmodeller are statistical tools used to analyze data collected over time from the same individuals or entities, known as panel data. This type of data allows researchers to control for unobserved heterogeneity, which are characteristics of the individuals or entities that remain constant over time but might influence the outcome variable.

The core idea behind panel regression is to leverage both the cross-sectional variation (differences between individuals at a given time) and the time-series variation (changes within an individual over time). This is achieved by including specific components in the model to account for these sources of variation.

There are several common types of panel regression models. Pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) is the simplest, treating all observations as independent, but it ignores the panel structure and can lead to biased results if unobserved heterogeneity is present. Fixed Effects (FE) models explicitly control for time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity by including dummy variables for each individual or entity. This effectively removes the influence of these constant characteristics. Random Effects (RE) models, on the other hand, assume that the unobserved heterogeneity is random and uncorrelated with the independent variables. They use a generalized least squares approach to estimate the model.

The choice between Fixed Effects and Random Effects models often depends on the assumptions about the correlation between unobserved heterogeneity and the explanatory variables. The Hausman test is a common statistical test used to help decide which model is more appropriate. Panel regression models are widely used in economics, sociology, political science, and other fields to study dynamic relationships and causal effects.
