Palkokasvikasvustot refers to the root nodules or tubercles that form on the roots of plants belonging to the Fabaceae family, commonly known as legumes. These specialized structures are the result of a symbiotic relationship between the legume plant and a specific type of soil bacterium called Rhizobium. The Rhizobium bacteria infect the root hairs of the legume and are then enclosed within a membrane, triggering the plant to form the nodule.

Inside these nodules, the Rhizobium bacteria are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
