Pakettikytkettyjä, meaning "packet-switched" in Finnish, refers to a method of data transmission in telecommunications networks. Instead of establishing a dedicated, continuous circuit between two points for the duration of a communication, data is broken down into small units called packets. Each packet contains a portion of the data along with addressing information that indicates its source and destination.

These packets are then sent independently across the network, potentially taking different paths to reach their destination. Network nodes, such as routers, examine the addressing information in each packet and forward it towards its intended recipient. At the destination, the packets are reassembled in the correct order to reconstruct the original data. This contrasts with circuit-switched networks, where a dedicated physical path is reserved for the entire communication session, as seen in traditional telephone calls.

Packet switching offers several advantages. It allows for more efficient use of network resources because multiple communications can share the same network infrastructure simultaneously. If a particular path is congested, packets can be rerouted, making the network more resilient to failures. This technology forms the foundation of modern data networks, including the internet, and is crucial for technologies like email, web browsing, and file transfer. The ability to handle variable amounts of data and adapt to network conditions makes packet switching a highly flexible and scalable solution.
