Oxidové is a term that generally refers to compounds containing oxygen. In chemistry, oxides are chemical compounds that have at least one oxygen atom and one other element in their chemical formula. These compounds are formed through the process of oxidation, where a substance reacts with oxygen. Metal oxides are typically formed when a metal reacts with oxygen. Many metal oxides are basic, meaning they react with acids to form salt and water. Nonmetal oxides are formed when a nonmetal reacts with oxygen. These are generally acidic, reacting with bases to form salt and water. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are common examples of acidic oxides. Carbon dioxide, for instance, dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. Some nonmetal oxides, like carbon monoxide (CO), are neutral and do not exhibit acidic or basic properties. The study of oxides is fundamental to understanding chemical reactions and the composition of many materials, including rocks, minerals, and atmospheric gases.
