Osmoreceptors are sensory receptors that detect changes in the osmotic pressure of bodily fluids. They are primarily located in the hypothalamus of the brain, but also exist in other areas such as the liver and kidneys. These specialized neurons play a crucial role in maintaining the body's water balance and regulating fluid volume.

When the osmotic pressure of the blood increases, indicating dehydration or a high concentration of solutes, osmoreceptors are stimulated. This stimulation triggers a series of physiological responses aimed at conserving water and restoring fluid balance. The most significant of these responses is the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, from the posterior pituitary gland. ADH acts on the kidneys, increasing their reabsorption of water and reducing urine production.

Conversely, when the osmotic pressure of the blood decreases, signifying that the body is overhydrated, osmoreceptor activity is reduced. This leads to a decrease in ADH secretion, causing the kidneys to excrete more water in the urine. Osmoreceptors also contribute to the sensation of thirst, prompting an individual to drink water when dehydration is detected. Through these mechanisms, osmoreceptors are vital for homeostasis, ensuring that the concentration of solutes and water in the body's fluids remains within a narrow, life-sustaining range.
