Ordenstatistieken, a Dutch term, translates to "order statistics" in English. In mathematics, order statistics are the values of a random variable obtained by sorting its observations in ascending order. Given a set of independent and identically distributed random variables, their order statistics represent these variables arranged from smallest to largest.

The concept is fundamental in probability theory and statistics. The smallest value is denoted as X(1), the second smallest as X(2), and so on, up to the largest value, X(n), where n is the total number of observations. These ordered values have their own probability distributions, which can be derived from the distribution of the original random variables.

Order statistics are widely used in various statistical applications. They play a crucial role in non-parametric statistics, where assumptions about the underlying distribution are minimal. For instance, the median, a common measure of central tendency, is the middle order statistic (or the average of the two middle ones if n is even). Other applications include robust estimation methods, reliability analysis, and the study of extreme values. The properties of order statistics, such as their expected values and variances, are well-studied and provide valuable insights into the behavior of data.
