Chromatic aberration occurs due to the dispersion of light, causing different wavelengths to focus at different points, leading to color fringing.

Other aberrations include coma, which resembles a comet's tail and affects off-axis points, and astigmatism, where light rays in perpendicular planes do not focus at the same point, causing lines in different orientations to appear blurred. Distortion is another type of aberration where straight lines in the object appear curved in the image, either barrel distortion (lines bulge outwards) or pincushion distortion (lines curve inwards).

The presence and severity of optical aberrations depend on the design of the optical system, the materials used, and the manufacturing precision. In applications such as photography, microscopy, and astronomy, minimizing these aberrations is crucial for achieving high-quality images. Optical engineers employ various techniques to correct or reduce aberrations, including using multiple lens elements with different refractive indices and shapes, employing aspheric surfaces, or using specialized coatings.
