Opptjeningsgrunnlag is a Norwegian term that translates literally to “earning basis” or “earnings base” and refers to the taxable income upon which social security contributions and pension entitlements are calculated. The concept is central to the Norwegian pension system, including the old-age pension (pension for age), disability pension, and survivor’s pension. For each calendar year, an individual’s opptjeningsgrunnlag is derived from the gross wages, salary, bonuses, and other income that are subject to tax. It excludes certain deductions such as employer pension contributions that are not considered part of the individual’s taxable income for this calculation.
