oligophosphates
An oligophosphate is a chemical species composed of a small number of phosphate groups linked by covalent bonds, typically phosphoanhydride or phosphodiester linkages. The term “oligo” indicates that the chain length is modest, usually between two and ten phosphate units, in contrast to long-chain polyphosphates that can contain dozens or hundreds of units. Oligophosphates can be synthesized chemically from dihydrogen phosphate salts or produced enzymatically by phosphodiesterases and kinases that transfer phosphate groups.
The nomenclature of oligophosphates follows the pattern of the number of phosphate units: diphosphate (two units),
Oligophosphates serve several important roles in nature and technology. In biochemistry they act as high-energy carriers;
