oldalon

Oldalon is a fictional town used in educational contexts to illustrate European-style municipal organization and regional geography. Set in the imagined country of Veridia, Oldalon lies in a river valley along the River Vira, about 60 kilometers from Veridia’s capital.

The town covers roughly 40 square kilometers and has a population around 5,200, with a compact core and surrounding farmland. Elevation ranges from 150 to 320 meters above sea level, and the climate is temperate.

Historically, Oldalon dates to the 12th century, with a notable medieval church and market square. It developed via river trade, received a municipal charter in the 14th century, and modernized in the 19th. The 20th century brought rural decline, followed by modest growth in the 2000s.

Economy centers on agriculture—especially vineyards and olives—alongside small manufacturing and services. Tourism draws visitors to the historic center, the riverfront, and nearby countryside.

Governance follows a mayor–council system. The town provides education, waste management, planning, and local services, funded by local taxes and intergovernmental transfers.

Cultural sites include the 13th-century Church of St. Martin and the Riverfront Promenade. The annual Harvest Festival highlights regional produce and crafts.
