Oktaven is the plural form of the musical term Oktave in German and related languages and is used to refer to octaves in those traditions. In English, the corresponding term is octave.

In Western music, an octave spans eight diatonic steps, though there are twelve semitones in the octave when using equal temperament. Notes separated by an octave share the same letter name (for example C and the higher C). This property is called octave equivalence and underpins transposition and pitch class concepts.

Tuning systems: in equal temperament, the octave is divided into 12 equal semitones, ensuring consistent transposition across keys. Other tunings, such as just intonation or Pythagorean tuning, also preserve a 2:1 frequency ratio across octaves but adjust the internal spacing of notes within the octave.

Notation and usage: octaves are indicated in staff notation by pitch registers; to simplify reading across a wide range, composers use octave designation such as 8va (ottava) to play notes an octave higher or 8vb for lower. Instrument ranges are named by octave designations, from subcontra to high.

Historically, octaves have been central to musical theory in many cultures, shaping scales, timbre perception, and instrument design. The octave concept supports polyphonic texture, voice leading, and transposition across repertoires.
