ofþorn
Ofþorn is a character from the Old English epic poem Beowulf. He is the son of the Geatish king Hygelac and his queen Hygd. Ofþorn is mentioned as a young man, presumably a warrior, who survives the disastrous battle in Frisia where his father and many other Geats are killed. After the death of his uncle Heardred, who succeeded Hygelac, Ofþorn becomes the king of the Geats. He is described as a good ruler and a strong warrior, capable of defending his people. Ofþorn's reign is characterized by peace and prosperity, and he is known for his wisdom and courage. He eventually aids his kinsman Beowulf in his final battle against the dragon, though he is not present for the fight itself. Ofþorn's importance lies in his lineage and his role in preserving the Geatish kingdom after periods of great loss and turmoil. He represents a continuation of strength and leadership for the Geats.
