Næringsstoffsyklusen, also known as nutrient cycling, refers to the pathways by which chemical elements and compounds move through the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem. These cycles are crucial for maintaining the health and productivity of ecosystems by ensuring the continuous availability of essential elements for living organisms. Key nutrients that undergo significant cycling include carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and water.

The carbon cycle, for instance, involves the exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, and this carbon is then transferred to consumers when they eat plants. Respiration by both plants and animals releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, while decomposition of dead organic matter also contributes to atmospheric carbon.

The nitrogen cycle is particularly complex, as atmospheric nitrogen (N2) must be converted into usable forms, such as ammonia and nitrates, by nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Plants absorb these inorganic nitrogen compounds, which are then passed on to animals. Denitrifying bacteria eventually convert nitrates back into atmospheric nitrogen, completing the cycle.

Phosphorus, unlike carbon and nitrogen, does not have a significant atmospheric component. Its cycle primarily involves the slow weathering of rocks, which releases phosphate into the soil and water. Plants absorb dissolved phosphates, and these are transferred through the food web. The long-term availability of phosphorus can be a limiting factor in many ecosystems.

Water, or the hydrological cycle, is also a vital nutrient cycle, involving evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff. This continuous movement of water is essential for all life processes and influences the availability of other nutrients. Understanding nutrient cycles is fundamental to ecology and environmental science, aiding in the management of natural resources and the remediation of pollution.
