The visual system, or nägemissüsteem in Estonian, is the part of the nervous system that enables vision. It is responsible for processing visual information from the environment, allowing us to perceive light, color, depth, and movement. This complex system involves multiple organs and structures, primarily the eyes, and their intricate connections to the brain.

The process begins with light entering the eye through the cornea and pupil, then passing through the lens. The lens focuses this light onto the retina, a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The retina contains photoreceptor cells called rods and cones. Rods are responsible for vision in low light conditions and detecting movement, while cones are responsible for color vision and sharp detail in brighter light.

When light strikes these photoreceptors, it triggers a series of chemical and electrical signals. These signals are then processed by other cells within the retina, such as bipolar cells and ganglion cells. The axons of the ganglion cells form the optic nerve, which transmits the processed visual information from the retina to the brain.

The optic nerve carries these signals to the thalamus, a relay station in the brain, and then to the visual cortex, located in the occipital lobe at the back of the brain. Here, the information is further interpreted and integrated with other sensory inputs, allowing us to recognize objects, understand spatial relationships, and navigate our surroundings. The visual system is a remarkable example of biological engineering, allowing for our rich experience of the visual world.
