Nukleaatioteoria, also known as the theory of nucleation, describes the initial stage of forming a new thermodynamic phase or structure. This process is fundamental to many physical phenomena, including crystallization, precipitation, and the formation of droplets from vapor. It involves the overcoming of an energy barrier, often referred to as the nucleation barrier, which is required to create a stable nucleus of the new phase.

There are two primary types of nucleation: homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous nucleation occurs spontaneously within a homogeneous medium, without the influence of any foreign surfaces or impurities. This process requires a significant degree of supersaturation or supercooling to overcome the nucleation barrier. Heterogeneous nucleation, on the other hand, occurs on the surface of a foreign material, such as dust particles or container walls. This type of nucleation is generally easier to achieve because the foreign surface lowers the nucleation barrier, reducing the amount of supersaturation or supercooling needed.

The formation of a stable nucleus is a delicate balance between opposing thermodynamic forces. On one hand, the formation of the new phase is often thermodynamically favorable due to a decrease in free energy. However, creating a new surface or interface between the old and new phases incurs an increase in surface free energy, which acts as a barrier to nucleation. When the size of the nucleus reaches a critical radius, the favorable bulk free energy change outweighs the unfavorable surface free energy change, and the nucleus becomes stable and can grow further.
