Nucleoläre refers to a sub-organ within the nucleus of cells that performs a specific function. The nucleolus is a distinct region found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells where ribosome synthesis occurs. It is a site of active transcription and protein synthesis, where ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and ribosomal proteins come together to form ribosome subunits.

Structurally, the nucleolus is a floppy, ill-defined region that can vary in size and shape depending on the cell type and its metabolic activity. It is typically found near the nucleolar organizer region (NOR), a specific region on the chromosome where the genes for rRNA are located. The nucleolus is not fixed in place and can move or change shape in response to changes in the cell's demand for ribosome production.

Functionally, the nucleolus is responsible for producing the large and small subunits of ribosomes, which are essential for protein synthesis in the cytoplasm. It carries out two types of transcription: the transcription of rRNA and the transcription of genes coding for ribosomal proteins. These two types of transcripts then come together in the nucleolus to form the precursor ribosome, which is then transported out of the nucleus to the cytoplasm.

The nucleolus is considered a dynamic and highly regulated structure within the cell that plays a critical role in regulating cell growth and metabolism. Mutations or dysregulation of nucleolar function have been implicated in various diseases, including cancer, which often show altered nucleolar morphology and increased nucleolar size.
