Nucleocitoplasmático refers to anything that occurs in or relates to both the nucleus and the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell. This includes processes, molecules, and structures that traverse or interact between these two distinct cellular compartments. For instance, messenger RNA (mRNA) is transcribed in the nucleus and then transported to the cytoplasm to be translated into proteins. This movement from the nucleus to the cytoplasm is a nucleocytoplasmic process. Similarly, ribosomal subunits are assembled in the nucleolus, a structure within the nucleus, and then exported to the cytoplasm to form functional ribosomes.

Conversely, RNA molecules and ribosomal proteins are exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.

Disruptions in nucleocytoplasmic transport are implicated in various diseases, including viral infections and neurodegenerative disorders, highlighting the critical importance of maintaining proper nucleocytoplasmic communication for cellular health and organismal homeostasis. The study of nucleocytoplasmic processes is fundamental to understanding gene expression, cell signaling, and overall cellular physiology.
