Nopeutus, meaning acceleration in Finnish, refers to the rate at which an object's velocity changes over time. Velocity is a vector quantity that includes both speed and direction. Therefore, acceleration can occur if an object's speed increases, decreases, or if its direction of motion changes, even if its speed remains constant.

In physics, acceleration is mathematically defined as the change in velocity divided by the time interval over which that change occurs.
