Nitrogeenisäätöihin, or nitrogen regulation, refers to the processes that control the availability and cycling of nitrogen within ecosystems. Nitrogen is a vital nutrient for all living organisms, being a key component of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids. However, atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2), which constitutes about 78% of the air, is largely unavailable to most organisms due to its strong triple bond.

The cycling of nitrogen involves several key transformations facilitated by microorganisms. Nitrogen fixation is the process where atmospheric N2 is converted into usable forms like ammonia (NH3) or ammonium (NH4+). This is primarily carried out by certain bacteria and archaea. Nitrification is a two-step process where ammonia is oxidized first to nitrite (NO2-) and then to nitrate (NO3-) by different groups of bacteria. Nitrate is readily absorbed by plants.

Denitrification, conversely, converts nitrate back into atmospheric nitrogen gas, completing the cycle. This process is also carried out by various bacteria under anaerobic conditions. Other important processes include ammonification, where organic nitrogen is decomposed into ammonia, and assimilation, where plants take up inorganic nitrogen from the soil.

Human activities, such as the industrial production of fertilizers, agricultural practices, and the burning of fossil fuels, significantly impact natural nitrogen cycles. These impacts can lead to issues like eutrophication of water bodies, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the importance of understanding and managing nitrogen regulation for environmental health.
