Nitrifikasjondenitrifikasjon is a two-step biological process that converts ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4+) into nitrates (NO3-), which can then be used by plants. This process is crucial in the nitrogen cycle, which is essential for the growth of plants and the overall health of ecosystems.

The first step, nitrification, is carried out by two types of bacteria: Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter. Nitrosomonas bacteria convert ammonia and ammonium into nitrites (NO2-) using oxygen. Nitrobacter bacteria then convert the nitrites into nitrates using oxygen.

The second step, denitrification, is carried out by bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Thiobacillus. These bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) under anaerobic conditions, releasing these gases into the atmosphere.
