Neutronstjärnornas are the extremely dense remnants of massive stars that have collapsed at the end of their life cycle. These stars are born from supernova explosions, specifically from the core collapse of stars that are roughly 10 to 25 times the mass of our Sun. When such a star exhausts its nuclear fuel, gravity overcomes the outward pressure, causing a catastrophic implosion. The intense pressure forces protons and electrons to combine, forming neutrons. This process creates an object composed almost entirely of neutrons packed incredibly tightly together.

The density of a neutronstjärna is staggering. A teaspoonful of neutronstjärna material would weigh billions of tons. They are typically only about 20 kilometers in diameter but contain more mass than our Sun. This extreme density gives them incredibly strong gravitational fields. Neutronstjärnornas rotate very rapidly, often hundreds of times per second, due to the conservation of angular momentum during the collapse.

Many neutronstjärnornas emit beams of electromagnetic radiation from their magnetic poles. If these beams sweep across Earth as the star rotates, we observe them as regular pulses of radiation, and these are known as pulsars. Some neutronstjärnornas are also found in binary systems, where they can accrete matter from a companion star, leading to powerful X-ray emissions. If the mass of a neutronstjärna exceeds a certain limit, known as the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, it will collapse further to form a black hole.
