Neuronityypit refers to the classification of neurons based on various criteria. Neurons, the fundamental units of the nervous system, can be categorized by their structure, function, or the neurotransmitter they release.

Structurally, neurons are often divided into unipolar, bipolar, and multipolar neurons. Unipolar neurons have a single process extending from the cell body, which then bifurcates. Bipolar neurons have two processes: one axon and one dendrite, extending from opposite ends of the cell body. Multipolar neurons are the most common type, possessing one axon and multiple dendrites.

Functionally, neurons are broadly classified as sensory neurons, motor neurons, and interneurons. Sensory neurons (afferent neurons) transmit signals from sensory receptors towards the central nervous system. Motor neurons (efferent neurons) carry signals from the central nervous system to muscles or glands. Interneurons, found within the central nervous system, connect other neurons and play a role in processing information.

Another common classification is based on the neurotransmitter produced by the neuron. For example, cholinergic neurons release acetylcholine, while dopaminergic neurons release dopamine. Other categories include serotonergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic neurons, each named after their primary neurotransmitter. This functional diversity is crucial for the complex communication within the nervous system.
