The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is further divided into several regions, including the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem, and diencephalon. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is responsible for higher brain functions such as thought, reasoning, and motor control. The cerebellum plays a crucial role in coordination and balance. The brainstem connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls vital functions such as breathing and heart rate. The diencephalon includes structures like the thalamus and hypothalamus, which are involved in consciousness, sleep, and hormone regulation.

The spinal cord extends from the brainstem down to the lower back and is responsible for transmitting messages between the brain and the rest of the body. It is protected by the vertebrae and is surrounded by three membranes called the meninges.

The peripheral nervous system comprises the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and the autonomic nervous system. Cranial nerves emerge from the brain and are responsible for sensory and motor functions. Spinal nerves emerge from the spinal cord and innervate the limbs and organs. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary functions such as heart rate and digestion.

Neuroanatomy is essential for understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, which is crucial for diagnosing and treating neurological disorders. It also plays a significant role in research, particularly in the fields of neuroscience and neuroengineering.
