A partial nephrectomy involves removing only the cancerous or diseased portion of the kidney, leaving the healthy part intact. This approach is preferred when possible, as it helps preserve kidney function. A radical nephrectomy, on the other hand, involves the complete removal of the entire kidney, along with surrounding tissues, and sometimes the adrenal gland and nearby lymph nodes.

Nephrectomies can be performed using open surgery, which involves a larger incision, or minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic or robotic surgery. Minimally invasive approaches typically result in smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster recovery time.

After a nephrectomy, patients may experience some pain and fatigue. The recovery period varies depending on the type of surgery performed and the individual's overall health. If only one kidney is removed, the remaining kidney usually functions adequately to maintain overall health. If both kidneys are removed, the patient will require dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. Potential risks associated with nephrectomies include bleeding, infection, and damage to surrounding organs.
