Neitsyt is a Finnish noun that translates literally to “virgin” in English. In everyday usage it refers to an unmarried or sex‑free woman, but it can also be used more broadly in expressions such as “neitsytkauniikka” (virgin beauty) or in symbolic contexts. The word has a long history in Finnish literature and folklore, appearing in folk songs, poetry, and mythological tales where the “virgin” is often portrayed as a pure or untouched figure.

The term has also been used as a title in Finnish arts. The 1978 drama film known in English as The Virgin (Finnish title: Neitsyt) was directed by Olli Soini and stars Beata Sjöström; it follows the life of a young woman from a small Finnish town within the constraints of conservative values. A later documentary, Neitsyt (1996), directed by J. P. Kulho, examines the changing notions of purity and sexuality in post‑Cold War Finland.
