Nefrogeneesisen is a term that refers to the origin or formation of the kidneys. This process is part of the broader development of the urinary system in vertebrates. The kidneys develop from the intermediate mesoderm, a germ layer that lies between the ectoderm and endoderm during embryonic development. This mesodermal tissue differentiates into a series of structures known as the nephric ridge, from which the kidneys and associated ducts arise.

The development of the kidneys is a complex and sequential process. In mammals, three successive kidney systems arise from the nephric ridge: the pronephros, mesonephros, and metanephros. The pronephros is the most anterior and rudimentary, typically existing only transiently in the embryo. The mesonephros is a more developed, intermediate kidney that functions for a period during embryonic life but is largely replaced by the permanent kidney. The metanephros is the precursor to the permanent, functional kidney found in adult mammals.

The formation of the metanephros involves a reciprocal interaction between two distinct structures: the ureteric bud, which sprouts from the mesonephric duct, and the metanephric mesenchyme, which is derived from the intermediate mesoderm. The ureteric bud gives rise to the collecting duct system of the kidney, including the renal pelvis, calyces, and collecting tubules. The metanephric mesenchyme condenses around the tips of the growing ureteric bud and differentiates to form the nephrons, the functional filtering units of the kidney. This intricate developmental process ensures the proper formation and positioning of the kidneys for efficient filtration of waste products from the blood and production of urine.
