The nasopharynx is the uppermost part of the pharynx, located behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate. It serves as a passageway for air moving from the nose to the lungs. The nasopharynx is lined with respiratory epithelium, which is ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells. These cilia help to move mucus and trapped particles away from the respiratory tract.

Several important structures are located within or connected to the nasopharynx. The pharyngeal tonsil, also known as adenoids, is located on the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. The openings of the auditory tubes (Eustachian tubes) are found on the lateral walls, connecting the nasopharynx to the middle ear. These tubes equalize pressure between the middle ear and the atmosphere. The soft palate hangs down from the posterior edge of the hard palate and separates the oropharynx from the nasopharynx. During swallowing, the soft palate elevates to block the nasopharynx, preventing food and liquids from entering the nasal cavity.

The nasopharynx plays a role in respiration, immune defense, and hearing. Infections can affect the nasopharynx, leading to conditions such as adenoiditis. Tumors can also arise in this region. Understanding the anatomy and function of the nasopharynx is crucial for diagnosing and treating various medical conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract and related structures.
