Nasalhulen, also known as the nasal cavity, is the large space inside the nose. It begins at the nostrils and extends back to the choanae, which open into the nasopharynx. The nasal cavity is divided into two passages by a septum, called the left and right nasal cavities.

This structure plays a crucial role in respiration. As air enters through the nostrils, it passes over specialized mucous membranes lining the nasal cavity. These membranes warm and humidify the inhaled air, preparing it for the lungs. They also trap dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, preventing them from reaching the delicate tissues of the respiratory system. Tiny hair-like structures called cilia constantly sweep this trapped debris towards the throat to be swallowed or expelled.

The nasal cavity is also essential for the sense of smell. Olfactory receptors, located in the upper part of the nasal cavity, detect airborne odor molecules. These signals are then transmitted to the brain, allowing us to perceive different smells. Furthermore, the nasal cavity contributes to voice resonance, influencing the quality of our vocal sounds. Several paranasal sinuses, air-filled cavities within the bones of the skull, connect to the nasal cavity, and they also play a role in humidifying and warming air and in vocal resonance. Conditions affecting the nasal cavity can impact breathing, smell, and even speech.
