Mélykisülés is a Hungarian term that literally translates to "deep discharge." In the context of batteries, it refers to a condition where a battery's voltage drops below its safe minimum operating level. This can occur if a device continues to draw power from a battery even after it has reached its low-voltage cutoff point, or if the battery is left discharged for an extended period.

Deep discharge is detrimental to most rechargeable battery chemistries, particularly lead-acid and lithium-ion. In lead-acid batteries, it can lead to irreversible sulfation, where lead sulfate crystals build up on the plates, reducing the battery's capacity and lifespan. For lithium-ion batteries, deep discharge can damage the internal structure, potentially compromising safety and significantly reducing the number of charge cycles the battery can endure.

Symptoms of mélykisülés can include a battery failing to hold a charge, a noticeable decrease in performance, and in extreme cases, a complete inability to recharge. Preventive measures involve using devices with proper low-voltage protection circuits that automatically disconnect the load when the battery voltage becomes too low. Regularly charging batteries before they reach critically low levels also helps to avoid mélykisülés. Specialized chargers are also available that can sometimes recover batteries that have experienced a mild deep discharge, though severely affected batteries may be beyond repair.
