målstrek

Målstrek is a term used in Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages to denote the goal line, the boundary line at each end of a playing field that defines the scoring area. The word combines mål meaning "goal" and strek meaning "line."

In association football (soccer), the goal line runs the width of the pitch at each end. For a goal to be scored, the ball must wholly cross the goal line between the posts and beneath the crossbar. If any part of the ball remains on or above the line, the goal is not awarded.

In ice hockey and field hockey, a goal is awarded when the puck (ice hockey) or the ball (field hockey) completely crosses the goal line into the goal, between the posts. The goal line is thus a decisive boundary in these sports as well.

Markup and enforcement: The goal line is a fixed marking on the playing surface. In many competitions, goal-line technology or video review is used to help officials determine whether the line has been crossed in disputed cases.
